Ectodermal Dysplasias (ED)
Ectodermal Dysplasias (ED) are a group of disorders in which the group of cells responsible for forming skin, sweat glands, hair, nails and teeth develop abnormally. Each person is affected differently by the condition. In fact, there are more than 150 medically-distinct syndromes in which ED presents.
Dental Care for Individuals with ED
Individuals affected by ED may have a variety of features, depending on the type of ED. Even family members with the same type of ED may not experience the same symptoms! Mouth-related problems related to ED include:
Thinner or softer enamel, which may lead to an increase in tooth decay
Abnormally positioned or spaced teeth and jaws
Cleft lip or palate
Some or all teeth can be missing in people with ED.
If the dental exam suggests ectodermal dysplasia, a doctor with experience in ectodermal dysplasias can confirm the diagnosis. In some cases, a genetic test may help diagnose ED. Teeth-related issues should be managed by a team of specialists, including a Prosthodontist. Having an accurate diagnosis and the right team of health care professionals is critical to managing your care and medical insurance coverage for treatment.
The National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasias empowers and connects people touched by ectodermal dysplasias through education, support and research.
